Getting The Most Out Of Conferences

Last week’s post helped you pick a conference to go to.

Today, let’s talk about getting ready to attend whatever event you chose.

I travel a lot, and I take packing very seriously.

So, I think it is time to impart some of my wisdom along to you.

In case you don’t believe I am an expert in this area, let me tell you just how geeky I am…

I’m not quite sure if this is my secret shame or secret awesomeness…but I honestly cannot tell you how many hours (yes, hours) I have spent watching videos on how to pack well.

That research has led me to know a few things:

  • A bag with great wheels is totally worth the investment.
  • Always pack the things you need to be comfortable and make you feel your best.
  • Packing Cubes are a lifesaver and an absolute must!

It is so important to show up as your best self when you go to a conference.

You never know when (or where) you’ll meet potential clients or partners (and who might be watching).

(Important side tip: always bring a swimsuit. There is nothing like getting in the pool or hot tub at the end of the day to relax. And, I have had many important business connections come from time at the pool – so you still need to be at your best.)

Honestly, most people pack way too late.

Deciding what to bring and packing at the last minute is a recipe for disheveled clothes and a stressful event.

Picking out your outfits may sound trivial, but it can make a huge difference.

For instance, do you know your clothes will look good after they’ve been in a suitcase?

Will you be spending precious time recreating outfits after you arrive because you forgot what you intended when you put them in your bag?

I’m telling you…packing cubes are the utopia of travel.

I can pack outfits together so everything stays together – or separate by type of clothing.

So, if you aren’t packing “last minute” when should you start?

I usually get all my things together the day before the day before.

But, I don’t pack them yet.

Instead, I put them in a pile on my couch so I can see everything and make sure I’m not forgetting anything important.

I make a list of all the things I need – both business-wise and personally to make my travels happy.

This includes the obvious things: computer, phone, headset, extra battery, notebook…

And the not so obvious things:

I always travel with a pillow – it saves the night for me.

I eat a very particular diet because of my blood sugar, so I travel with my little blender to make my bullet coffee and I pack snacks I know I can eat.

I always bring sunscreen.

And I will never, ever go on any trip without my essential oils.

These are the things I need to be at my best, and so I make it a priority to have them with me.

Think of all the money you’ve spent to attend this conference, or what your business can get out of you being there…don’t you owe it to yourself to be at the top of your game?

Obviously, I think what you take to a conference is important. However, the way you are before you go and while you are there is even more important. So that’s what I’ll talk about next week.

Until then…stay passionate!
